A new AI-powered tool integrated into the Saga Social Care Case Management System is helping social care professionals in Pirkanmaa, Finland, process child protection referrals more efficiently, ensuring faster access to support for children and families in need. This tool is among the first artificial intelligence solutions in Finland to be directly embedded into a case management system for social care.
According to the Pirkanmaa Wellbeing services county, the AI tool is currently being piloted by one social work team. It supports professionals by speeding up the legally mandated assessment of service needs based on client data.
The AI solution is being developed in close collaboration with customers and partners by Mediconsult. Once fully integrated, the tool becomes a seamless part of the professional workflow within the Saga system.
“Our goal is to deliver the most effective and user-friendly AI solutions on the market,” says Ville Salaspuro, Chief Medical Officer responsible for AI development at Mediconsult.
The AI tool generates a structured assessment of the child’s and family’s service needs, aligned with legal requirements. This structured output helps professionals meet the obligations set by Finland’s Social Welfare Act, which mandates that service needs assessments must begin without delay and be completed promptly. All assessments must be documented using the Finnish Sosmeta client document structure, tailored to specific client groups.
AI functionality benefits both professionals and clients
Integrating the AI tool into the Saga Social Care case management system enables social care professionals to receive a pre-generated service needs assessment as a foundation for creating a client care plan. The professional responsible for the client can review, edit, and supplement the AI-generated assessment as needed. They also retain full control and can choose to compile the necessary information and complete the assessment manually within Saga, without using AI support.
The AI-based service needs assessment functionality in Saga significantly streamlines the work of social care professionals. It saves time by automating the collection of relevant data, allowing professionals to focus on interpreting the information, creating care plans, and implementing support measures.
This functionality also strengthens the client’s position. It enables a more accurate and comprehensive assessment of the client’s situation by extracting and organizing relevant data from large and complex datasets. This ensures that the factors influencing the client’s service needs are thoroughly considered.
AI-based service needs assessment can be expanded to other client groups
The AI functionality currently used to assess the service needs of children and families can also be adapted to support other client groups, such as working-age adults, older people, and individuals receiving disability services.
Each service area has distinct information requirements, shaped by the nature of the services and the client’s specific support needs. Therefore, the AI tool now being integrated into the Saga Social Care Case Management System and designed for assessing the needs of children and families, is not directly applicable to other client groups without modification.
Expanding AI-based assessments to additional client segments will require tailoring the tool to reflect the unique characteristics and data needs of each group. This ensures that the assessments remain accurate, relevant, and aligned with legal and professional standards in social care.
